The Crying Spell is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 2008 by vocalist Len Hotrum, guitarist Eric Snyder, drummer Chase Culp, and bassist Johnny Bacolas[1] (replaced in 2010 by Jason Phraner). Hotrum and Culp were previously in a band called Point One,[2] Snyder and Bacolas were in Second Coming.[3] After being joined by second guitarist Dane Brooks, The Crying Spell independently released their debut album Through Hell to Heaven in July 2008[4] and distributed it through their own website, iTunes, and Amazon.com.

In 2009, The Crying Spell performed alongside Live vocalist Ed Kowalczyk at the eighth annual tribute honoring Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley, who died seven years earlier after a long battle with drug addiction.[5] Johnny Bacolas was a close friend and former bandmate to Staley; the two of them were previously in a band called Alice N' Chains and roommates during the mid-1990s when Staley was in Mad Season. Bacolas left The Crying Spell in 2010 to pursue other endeavors (he is currently the bass player for another Seattle band called Lotus Crush) and was subsequently replaced by Jason Phraner.

As of 2011, The Crying Spell has become a quartet again due to the departure of Dane Brooks and have announced they are working on their sophomore album.
